You could catch the scent of anxiety hanging in the air, you could touch it with your finger. Gospodinov, who is a prolific poet and screenwriter as well, said in the press statement, “My urge to write this book came from the sense that something had gone awry in the clockworks of time. The jury also comprises Uilleam Blacker, a leading Ukrainian translator Tan Twan Eng, a Booker-shortlisted Malaysian writer Parul Sehgal, literary critic at The New Yorker and Frederick Studemann, literary editor at The Financial Times. Georgi Gospodinov’s Time Shelter, translated by Angela Rodel. It offers us a perspective on the destiny of countries like Bulgaria, which have found themselves at the heart of the ideological conflict between the West and the communist world.”
But it is also a great novel about Europe, a continent in need of a future, where the past is reinvented, and nostalgia is a poison. She added, “In scenes that are burlesque as well as heartbreaking, Gospodinov questions the way in which our memory is the cement of our identity and our intimate narrative. It is a profound work that deals with a very contemporary question: What happens to us when our memories disappear?” On the work, jury chair and French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani said in a statement, “ full of irony and melancholy. Georgi Gospodinov’s Time Shelter, translated by Angela Rodel, has become the first Bulgarian novel to win the International Booker Prize 2023, telling the story of a ‘clinic for the past’ which offers an unorthodox treatment to Alzheimer’s patients by allowing them to visit iconography from various decades on its different floors.
