I did find it helpful to hear someone else read after I had read it so I listen to it narrated by Christopher Lee.Ī key theme of the short story is mental health. This is definitely an opportunity for some new perspective and truly understanding the themes Poe uses by developing my own experience. That being said, it has always been based off what people have said and not actually reading his work. The dark themes of Poe's work is something that inspires my personal short stories and poetry. However, the mind of a 13 year old in middle school and a 24 year old in college are going to interpret American Gothic very differently so I definitely wanted to read this.
